Why almost everyone books three days

Two nights is the shortest trip that fits the park’s marquee sites without sprinting. It gets you to Padar for sunrise, on to a dragon trek at a ranger station, into the water at Manta Point when the current is running, and onto the Taka Makassar sandbar – and it still leaves the third morning for one unhurried snorkel before Labuan Bajo. A 2D1N cuts the manta channel and the sandbar. A 4D3N adds the northern pinnacles. Three days is where the route is balanced.

Day 1 – Labuan Bajo, Kelor, Manjarite, Kalong

You are collected on the Labuan Bajo mainland and boarded in the harbour. The first leg runs roughly one to one and a half hours to Kelor Island, a small hill with a short, steep path to the top and easy beach-entry snorkelling below it. From Kelor it is about 30 to 45 minutes to Manjarite, a shallow coral garden off white sand that suits nervous swimmers as well as confident ones.

Late afternoon the boat repositions to Kalong Island, a mangrove island whose name means flying fox. At dusk thousands of fruit bats lift off the mangroves and stream across the channel. There is no landing; you watch it from the deck with dinner coming out of the galley, and the boat stays at anchor there overnight.

Day 2 – Padar, Pink Beach, dragons, Manta Point, Taka Makassar

The long day, and the reason for the early alarm. Padar Island is climbed in the dark for the three-bay viewpoint at sunrise. The hike is short but genuinely steep, on steps and loose ground, and you want proper shoes rather than sandals.

From Padar it is roughly one to one and a half hours to Pink Beach, where red coral fragments in the sand give the shoreline its colour and the fringing reef sits close in. Next is Komodo Island and the ranger station at Loh Liang, where a ranger-led walking trail takes you to see wild Komodo dragons. Rangers set the pace and the rules; this is not a walk you do alone.

The afternoon is the marine highlight. Manta Point at Karang Makassar is a current-swept channel where reef mantas aggregate to feed and be cleaned. It is a drift snorkel, the current does the work, and the animals are wild – sightings are common through most of the year when the currents run, but no operator can guarantee them. Fifteen to thirty minutes further on, Taka Makassar is a narrow white sandbar in shallow turquoise water, and how much of it is above water depends entirely on the tide.

Day 3 – Sebayur and home

A final morning snorkel at Sebayur, a reef and wall about one and a half to two hours from Labuan Bajo, then the sail back and a transfer to your hotel or the airport. Guests on afternoon flights usually make them comfortably; if your flight is before midday, tell us at booking so the crew can plan the morning around it.

A realistic fitness note

Padar is steep and exposed, with no shade at the top. The dragon trek is flat but hot, on sand and gravel, and lasts around an hour. Manta Point involves current, and while life vests are provided and the guide stays with the group, weak swimmers should say so in advance.
