How do you get to Labuan Bajo?
By air, in practice. Komodo Airport, IATA code LBJ, is the gateway to the whole region and it is a small, single-terminal operation. There is no rail, and the overland and ferry routes across Flores or from Sumbawa exist but take days rather than hours and are not a sensible way to make a boat departure.

Why do you insist on arriving the day before?
Because the failure mode is expensive and common. Morning flights out of Denpasar are regularly delayed, and Labuan Bajo weather can hold aircraft. A liveaboard with a full cabin manifest boards around midday and sails in the early afternoon; it cannot hold for one delayed passenger without costing everyone else the Kelor stop and, in a bad case, the Kalong sunset.
Arriving the previous afternoon converts a single point of failure into a comfortable evening. You get a night in a real bed, a proper dinner, an ATM run for park-fee cash, and a relaxed morning. Guests who do this consistently start the trip in better shape than those who arrive off a 06:00 flight and board straight into a safety brief. What is Komodo Airport like, and how far is the harbour?
Small and straightforward. One terminal, a short walk from the aircraft, baggage reclaim that takes minutes rather than an hour. Facilities are limited – do not plan on a long connection there, and do not count on a working ATM.
The airport is a short drive from Labuan Bajo town and its harbour; the whole town is compact enough that transfers are measured in minutes. Where should you stay the night before?
Anywhere in or immediately around the town centre. Labuan Bajo has grown fast and now spans everything from simple guesthouses to hillside resorts. The practical criteria are:
- Walkable to the waterfront strip for dinner, so you are not arranging transport on your first evening
- Near an ATM – you want rupiah cash for park charges before you sail
- Somewhere that will hold a bag if you want to leave excess luggage ashore rather than take a hard case on board
- A hillside view if you can; the sunset over the bay from above the town is genuinely one of the better ones in Indonesia
What should you do before you board?

- Repack into a soft bag and leave the hard case at your hotel.
What about the return day?
This is where people get caught a second time. A three-night cruise disembarks in Labuan Bajo in the morning after a final snorkel, but the exact time depends on sea state and where the boat spent the last night. Booking an early-morning departure out of LBJ on disembarkation day is a bad bet.
