Batu Bolong, Castle Rock and Crystal Rock are Komodo’s headline pinnacle dives. All three are current-driven and none are beginner sites. They sit in the north of the park, which means they realistically require a four-night liveaboard rather than a day trip out of Labuan Bajo.
Stated plainly: Neptune Cruise is a dive-friendly phinisi with a dive deck and rinse facilities, not a dive centre. We do not employ in-house instructors and we do not certify divers. Diving is arranged with licensed dive operators, and you dive on your own existing certification and logged experience.
Why is Komodo a difficult place to dive?
Because the whole system is driven by water moving between the Flores Sea and the Indian Ocean through a set of narrow channels. That flow is what makes Komodo one of the richest reef systems in Indonesia – it delivers nutrients, it builds soft coral, it concentrates fish – and it is also what makes the good sites unsuitable for inexperienced divers.
Current here is not the gentle drift of a Bali reef. It can run hard, it changes direction with the tide, and it includes downcurrents at exposed pinnacles. Competent dive guides plan these sites around slack and the turn rather than around the group’s schedule, and they will call a dive off. That is a sign of a good operation, not a disappointing one.

What is Batu Bolong actually like?
Batu Bolong is a rock barely bigger than a room at the surface, with reef falling away steeply beneath it. The technique is to stay on the sheltered side of the pinnacle relative to the current and work up and down that face; crossing to the exposed side is where people get into trouble.
What you get for that discipline is the densest coral coverage most divers will ever see, stacked from a few metres down, with fish sitting in the lee in layers. It is a photographer’s site and a site where buoyancy control matters more than depth. Because current sets the entry window, a boat that can wait an hour dives it far better than one on a fixed schedule.
What about Castle Rock, Crystal Rock and The Cauldron?
These are the northern sites and they are a different proposition: offshore, exposed, and genuinely about pelagics. Castle Rock is a seamount where divers commonly use a reef hook to hold position in current and watch trevally hunting and grey reef sharks patrolling. Crystal Rock, close by, rises near enough to the surface that the light is excellent and the hard coral is in good condition.
The Cauldron, often called Shotgun, is the one people talk about afterwards: a channel dive where you drop in, get carried through a bowl-shaped depression and are flushed out over a plateau at speed. Manta sightings occur there. It is exhilarating and it is not a site to do on your tenth dive.
Why do these need a longer trip?
Geography. The northern sites sit hours from Labuan Bajo, and a day boat that goes there spends most of the day travelling. A three-night route built around Padar, Pink Beach, the dragon trek and Manta Point does not reach them either – it covers the central circuit.

What certification and experience do you need?
- Advanced Open Water or equivalent as a practical minimum for the pinnacles
- Logged current and drift experience – a certification card alone does not make these sites appropriate
- Recent diving. If it has been years, do a check dive on a gentle site first; Sebayur is the usual choice
- A reef hook for the northern seamounts, and the knowledge of how to use one
- Honesty about your logbook when the dive guide asks. Overstating experience at Castle Rock is how incidents happen

What if half your group does not dive?
Extremely common, and workable. While divers are on a pinnacle, snorkellers are usually on a shallower site nearby or on the tender, and the two groups reconvene for lunch. Komodo is unusually good at this because Manta Point genuinely works for both.
